Since my netball injury I have been itching to get back on my bike! Both my parents always cycled to work when I was younger and I always cycled to school. Cycling to work just makes sense, in my opinion, and in London cycling is by far and away the fastest way of getting around.

Great to read a post championing the humble bicycle! I actually live only a couple of miles from work, but I've never walked or biked because of the safety factor. Getting to work involves an overpass of a major freeway, and the road itself was not favorable to pedestrians. They're currently rebuilding the overpass and will be adding a protected pedestrian lane, so after that finishes in the late fall, I'm hoping to be able to think about biking or walking come next spring. I walk to and from work every day, and have for a few years now. I love it. I find biking to take only slightly less time, and it's a hassle to get my bike out of my apartment every day and back in again, and public transit takes just as long, so as long as the weather is nice (i.e. not raining; I do walk in the winter) I walk. It's great. Gives me some time to listen to music and podcasts. I live about 3.5 kilometers (a mile and a half) from work, so I do a 7 km round trip every day. Takes me about 35-40 minutes one-way. My commute is 16 miles and I have 2 children to drop off at my mother-in-law's house. So, I do not walk nor bike. However, we live in a small town with a little village. We walk to the post office, the market, the bank, etc. The kids love it! We live just under a mile from my work, and my husband's university; and we both walk spring, summer and fall. I personally hate biking, so though it takes longer it's worth it to me to walk (no dorky helmet!), and I love the chance to watch the early morning all around me. Most weeks we use the car 2, 3 times at the most.

I don't do so well in the winter (in western pa) though. 3/4 of a mile is a lot longer in ice and snow. heatherroth http://heatherroth.wordpress.com/ [email protected]
